MY OFFICE has received a number of emails from former employees and residents following the announcement that the Oldham Chronicle has been placed into administration.
Much concern remains about the retention of the rich archive of photos and records covering much of the period since it was established 163 years ago.
With over 1 million images held on plates, negatives, photographs and digital images it represents a significant collection of Oldham history which must be preserved.

I have been in touch with KPMG administrators to express my concern and have asked that they work to ensure that the collection can be retained in Oldham.
It will take some time for the administrator to establish what interest there is in acquiring the Oldham Chronicle assets which could be sold ‘as is’ to one bidder or split and sold to a number of interested parties.
The most logical home for the collection would be the new heritage centre once built which would provide an archive accessible to the public. Of course it is possible that a buyer might come forward who hopes to re-establish the Oldham Chronicle and retain its presence here in Oldham.
They have committed to ensuring that before a decision is made they will make contact to give an indication of what they are likely to do.
We still hold out hope that the Oldham Chronicle can be saved.
