Action, not just words – dangerous driving arrests made in Chadderton

Over recent weeks, I have had countless conversations with concerned residents on the doorstep, in advice surgery meetings, and through casework about dangerous driving and off-road biking in Chadderton. These issues are real, and are being tackled head on.

In Chadderton alone, over recent months we have:

𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐌𝐏 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 to press them to make local roads safer with increased visibility of road safety officers in hotspot areas, more physical safety measures, and greater education.

Raised 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐧𝐚𝐩 and it’s online submission of incidents portal.

Attended a 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐰𝐚𝐲 with the Oldham Road Policing Unit in Oldham

Hosted a meeting with representatives of my team and a group of residents, before 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐲.

Had representatives from my team at 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 was held with local residents, the Neighbourhood Policing Team, and the Council Community Safety Team in Chadderton.

Our action is making an impact.

At the weekend, officers from the Chadderton & Werneth Neighbourhood Policing Team were proactively patrolling, and perused, detained & arrested an adult male in a wooded area on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving without insurance, and possession of cannabis in Chadderton & Westwood.

This is just one example of how the Chadderton & Werneth Neighbourhood Policing Team are committed to ensuring the safety of everyone who uses our borough’s road network. While we are are not complacent and now more needs to be done, this success is encouraging

We prioritised creating a safe place at the general election last year in Oldham West, Chadderton & Royton because local people deserve to feel safe when going about their everyday lives in their neighbourhoods, on our high streets, and when on the road. Creating a safe place is about more than just tacvkling individual incidents, it is also about tackling the root causes of crime to prevent it all together.

We continue to be both 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞.

That is why Labour is legislating for both the Crime & Policing Bill which gives police stronger powers to tackle antisocial behaviour, and the Victims, Courts, & Public Protection Bill to ensure victims get the support they deserve; confirmed the timeline for delivery of our neighbourhood policing guarantee of 3,000 addition neighbourhood police officers and PCSOs; and will soon rolling out the Youth Futures Programme as part of a prevention strategy for young people.
