This Week in Parliament

Great to speak with ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—น ๐—ž๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ and friends in Parliament. A nice way to start the parliamentary week ahead๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ’ช

I gave an oral statement in the Commons on the ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป & ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฒ, and asked the Safeguarding Minister to confirm that arrangements are made to have an independent โ€œfront doorโ€ for victims and survivors into the process fully independent of councils and police forces. I also sought assurances that through the inquiry cross border offending will be pursued.

It was great to host ๐—ฎ ๐—ช๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—ด๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ-๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ later on Tuesday. For me as Chair of the Co-operative Party, the case is clear; if we want an inclusive, sustainable and resilient economy we have to deliver on our promise to double the size of the co-operative sector.

My opinion piece on this subject was published by PoliticsHome. Our work with the Government centres co-operative and community ownership, from clean green energy to fan-owned football.

Itโ€™s time we embedded co-operatives in our economic model itself. Thatโ€™s how we can build a legacy of real grassroots growth. Without a new model of growth, we’ll be just another government of empty promises. Click here if you’d like to read it: https://www.politicshome.com/…/without-new-model-growth…. ๐Ÿ

I was proud to vote to take the ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—•๐—ถ๐—น๐—น one step closer to becoming law. We inherited a broken justice system with prisons on the brink of collapse and backlogs meaning too many victims have not been getting the justice they deserve. Our approach is clear, being tough on crime, and tough on the causes of crime to punish criminals and reduce reoffending so we can finally take back our streets from crime.

Our landmark Renters Rights Bill has now passed all stages in both Houses of Parliament and is ready for the King’s Royal assent to become law. This is a historic moment: Labour in government delivering on our manifesto promise to ๐š๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ก ๐ฌ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ‘๐—ป๐—ผ-๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐—น๐˜’ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ๐ž๐ฏ๐ข๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ, apply the Decent Home standard to the private rented sector, and end rental bidding wars.

๐—”๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฎ ๐—ฅ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ deserves huge credit for us getting to this moment. From workers rights to a securing a generational investment in safe, decent & affordable housing, and much more she can be proud of whatโ€™s been achieved so far, and in what lays ahead as those efforts are felt by millions across the country. Great to sit by her side as she returned to the Commons.

Now back to Oldham for meetings with constituents …
