Delivering public ownership of buses to end the decades of cuts in services …

Public ownership of key services that local people rely on is a core Labour principle – and now with the Bus Act being enshrined into law, we have delivered it for buses as well as rail.

Ultimately, local people are not asking for the earth. Just bus services which they can rely on to turn up on time, be affordable, be accessible to all, are connected in one easy-to-use network, keep our air clean, and are run by them – this new Law does these things.

Thanks to Greater Manchester leading the way in bringing bus services back under the control of local people, the government is delivering on its manifesto commitment to end the ban on local authority ownership of bus companies 🐝

The Bus Services Act has completed its passage through Parliament and has recieved the King’s Royal Assent.

By overhauling how bus services operate to boost local control of services, Labour is delivering on our commitment to improve living standards across the country. Local authorities will control over routes, timetables, connections and fares, reversing the decades of decline we have seen.

Greater Manchester has led the way on this since 2017 and so much progress has been made with the completion of the publicly run Bee Network buses, its integration with the Metrolink, and ongoing work to bring commuter trains into the network over the next few years – including at Moston & Mills Hill which serve the constituency.

Here in Oldham, our reforms have pushed up ridership to the extent that we have been able to extend the £2 single fare cap, this new Law will allow the same reforms to happen across Britain. For our city-region specifically, this means we now have a legal framework to build upon the successes of the Bee Network 🚌

This government is ending the postcode lottery of bus services and neither the Tories or Reform voted for law, showing only Labour is on the side of passengers.
