Parliament has been busy delivering on the promises we made to people here in Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton with significant Bills and votes before the House.
This week, both the ๐๐๐ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ฐ๐ and the ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐โ ๐ฅ๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐๐ ๐๐ฐ๐ received Royal Assent and are now law. We said we would end the postcode lottery of services, and by restoring local control over buses, that is exactly what we are doing.
For renters, we are putting fairness back into the system: ending no-fault evictions and tackling the practice of forcing tenants to pay huge amounts of rent upfront.
As I spoke about in the Commons last week, more than 600 children are in temporary accommodation across Oldham West, Chadderton & Royton, having largely been driven out of their private rented accommodation because of no-fault evictions.
On Monday night, the ๐ฉ๐ถ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐บ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐๐ ๐๐ถ๐น๐น passed its final stages in the Commons and will now move to the House of Lords. These reforms are an important step in repairing our broken justice system, helping victims get the justice they deserve and protecting thousands more children from dangerous offenders.
We also backed the ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ถ๐น๐น at Third Reading, ensuring it too completes its passage through the Commons. After years of neglect that left prisons at breaking point and court backlogs out of control, this is a vital part of Labourโs plan to make our communities safer.
Our approach is clear: tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime to punish criminals and stop reoffending.
Now back up north for a weekend of meetings and visits across Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton.
