I appreciated Robert Troy, the Minister of State for Financial Services, Credit Unions, and Insurance in Ireland taking the time to discuss the work they are doing to strengthen and grow credit unions.
Credit unions, building societies and mutual banks are a foundation of fair access to affordable finance, but we can do more in the UK.
A key priority for the Co-op Party and MPs in Parliament. Critically credit unions are held back by limits on “potential members” which stunts growth and the ability to have larger more competitive credit unions then able to offer a greater range of financial products to local people.
I should also take this opportunity to welcome Lyndsey Gilkes as the new chief executive of Oldham Credit Union and thank Mike Louden for his decades of service to the town. ![]()
