This week in Parliament

Education Questions kicked things off on Monday. I pressed ministers for clarity on the proposed It was announced back in 2023 and parents, the council and local providers deserve straight answers on where it now stands. I also pushed again for ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—˜๐—ป๐—ด๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฑ so more are advertised in the summer, when young people actually need them.

On Tuesday, in the ๐—ช๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€, I spoke about the human and financial cost of failure. In Oldham, 633 children are living in temporary accommodation. Itโ€™s unacceptable. We need a whole-government effort to get families into safe, decent and affordable homes, and to shut down the rogue landlords exploiting this crisis.

Great as always to welcome pupils from ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฝ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐—–๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ ๐—ฅ๐—– ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—–๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ป to Parliament before the ๐—•๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ wrapped up on Wednesday. This Budget delivers for Oldham West, Chadderton & Royton: lifting 6,000 children out of poverty, freezing rail fares for the first time in 30 years, cutting energy bills by around ยฃ150, and freezing prescription charges. Real help with the cost of living.

I also pressed the Transport Secretary in a written question on ๐—ณ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐— ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฌ and poor drainage. Encouraging signs of progress, but thereโ€™s still more to do on a motorway our whole region relies on. To see more on this question I put forward, head to the MEN: https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/…/government…

In the Westminster Hall debate on ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜„๐˜€ ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฎ, I made the case for a co-operative ownership model so we can protect our local papers, radio stations and broadcasters – the people whoโ€™ve told Oldhamโ€™s story and held power to account for generations.

I had a number of interesting meetings including meeting with the outgoing CEO Robin Fieth and newly appointed Sarah Harrison from the Building Society Association on working to promote building societies and inclusive finance. I wish Robin the best in what follows and look forward to working with Sarah.

Members also voted on the ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ฆ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—•๐—ถ๐—น๐—น, which will reform pension schemes to deliver better value and channel more investment into local infrastructure and future industries.

Yesterday, I raised concerns about the ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜„ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜€ in England. It ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏโ€™๐˜ต ๐˜ข๐˜ง๐˜ง๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜–๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ, but as a former Minister for English Devolution & Local Government, I know the impact this has on local leaders whoโ€™ve acted in good faith. They deserve better.

Before heading back home, I asked the Leader of the House whether the government will back the 10-Minute Rule Bill I support on This isnโ€™t about banning fireworks, itโ€™s about setting reasonable noise limits and giving councils the powers they need to deal with repeated antisocial misuse. It matters to people with sensory issues, veterans, pet owners and anyone who just wants a quiet night.

Now the best bit, back in Oldham and some rewarding visits lined up this weekend.
