National Apprenticeships Week: backing local skills to bring industries back to Oldham

It’s National Apprenticeships Week, a chance to celebrate a route into work that changes lives. I was proud to be an apprentice, leaving school at 16, I trained at Oldham College and learned on the job from people with decades of experience. It opened doors for me – and I know it can do theContinue reading “National Apprenticeships Week: backing local skills to bring industries back to Oldham”

Congratulations to Oldham Council on their Adult Social Care CQC result!

A good conversation last week with Oldham Council’s Deputy Chief Executive for Health and Care last week where we spoke about the next steps to improve further local health services in our borough. This comes off the back of some welcome news this week that our borough’s adult social care services have been rated ‘𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱’Continue reading “Congratulations to Oldham Council on their Adult Social Care CQC result!”

This week in Parliament

A quick round-up of my week in Parliament The biggest positive move this week was without a doubt the vote to finally scrap the Tories two-child benefit cap. A policy that pushed children into poverty is finally going and that matters for thousands of families here in Oldham, the majority of which are working families.Continue reading “This week in Parliament”

Voting to lift over 11,300 Oldham children out of poverty – while Reform & the Tories rally against

On Tuesday, I voted in favour of the Universal Credit Bill to abolish the two-child benefit cap. It was wrong when the Tories brought it in, and it’s right that a Labour government is getting rid of it. Nationally, 1.6 million children are affected by the cap. A million of them are in working families.Continue reading “Voting to lift over 11,300 Oldham children out of poverty – while Reform & the Tories rally against”

Local support for action to protect under-16s online

A big thank you to everyone who’s been in touch about proposals to raise the age limit for social media to ban under-16s. From those who have been in touch from across Oldham West, Chadderton & Royton, the overwhelming majority were in favour of protecting our young people and the ban. Parents, carers and grandparentsContinue reading “Local support for action to protect under-16s online”

Calling for fairer & more accessible parking at Royal Oldham Hospital

If you’ve used Royal Oldham Hospital recently, you’ll know parking is a real problem. My team & I hear it time and again from patients, visitors and staff – I’ve experienced it myself. There simply aren’t enough spaces on site. Even where extra parking has been found nearby, the long walk up Sheepfoot Lane isContinue reading “Calling for fairer & more accessible parking at Royal Oldham Hospital”

Co-operation in action – building Community Britain across the country

The Co-operative Party is leading the charge on grassroots community action. For too long communities have been starved of the support and resources to thrive, and around £12bn of vital community assets have been lost in England alone. And so it was great to be over in Spen Valley this week, meeting with Kim LeadbeaterContinue reading “Co-operation in action – building Community Britain across the country”

Don’t Trash Oldham is delivering

This isn’t just a quick tidy-up. It’s proper deep cleaning, rapid fly-tipping removal, and a zero-tolerance approach to environmental crime – street by street, alleyway by alleyway, covering the whole of our borough. 𝗪𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗵, 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲, 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘁 & 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱 have already seen major clean-ups, with teams tackling long-neglected alleyways, roads and hotspots. Just as important,Continue reading “Don’t Trash Oldham is delivering”
