Clearing-up more waste on West End St. pitches

Thank you to representatives from Oldham Council who have cleared up waste that had built-up on the sports pitches just off West End Street in Coldhurst, as we continue work to restore the pitches to their former glory ready to be put in the hands of the local community.

We have been working for a long time with local Labour Councillors in Coldhurst to get the facilities on West End Street back to the standards that local people deserve. We have:

The previous Labour government brought the pitches to the area but 14 years of cuts under the Tories put this sports venue under threat, only being saved due to the hard work of local Labour councillors.

This Labour government, with our upcoming English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill will give residents the power to rescue the venues they love – and build a brighter future.

This much-loved community space is vital for the surrounding neighbourhoods. Being bounded by busy roads like Oldham Way, Chadderton Way, Rochdale Road and Middleton Road means local children need these pitches to have a safe communal place to play, get good exercise, see friends and get involved in sports clubs.

Promoting community ownership was one of our four core priorities for the people of Oldham West, Chadderton & Royton at the election last year, and the work on West End Street pitches is just one way we have delivered on that priority to empower local people, preserve heritage, and save local venues.

We will not stop working until the facilities are back to a good standard with local people in control of the future of the venue. We will continue to work with the council to secure funding for further improvements so that the pitches can be fully enjoyed once again by the local community.

Update: Parking, drop-off & pick-up charges at Manchester Airport

In a letter last month to the Manchester Airport Group (MAG) about our concerns with parking, drop-off & pick-up charges at Manchester Airport, we called for: a full review of signage approaching the airport, at terminals, and immediately on arrival is undertaken; an end to the practice of stacking up charges; a review of the appeals process, given unsuccessful appeals increase penalties further; and the airport to publish data on income from the drop-off and collection charges, so there is transparency on how much is made through duplicate charges and late payments.

In response to this, we welcome their confirmation that:

โœ… they are undertaking a project to review signage across Manchester Airport as it transitions to a two-terminal operation; and

โœ… they are looking at ways to automate our services, improving the customer experience at the airport as a way of reducing the practice of stacking up charges.

While these measures are encouraging, we know more needs to be done. To improve the transparency and fairness for local people, we are putting forward some suggestions to the MAG. These include:

โ—พ a ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฝ-๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ถ๐˜, with an option to pay online;

โ—พ an ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ฑ from 24 hours to 48 hours;

โ—พ ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜‚๐—ฝ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐˜€ immediately, so that only one fee is due per visit;

โ—พ allowing โ€˜๐—ป๐—ผ ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜€โ€™ ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น, so if an unsuccessful appeal was made during the โ€˜discountedโ€™ period, the lower amount would be due, rather than it defaulting to the higher figure; and

โ—พ ensuring ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜†, so there is the ability to exit without incurring a fee so that drivers can make an informed decision about whether to enter into the parking charge contract.

We will continue to make representations to Manchester Airport Group to ensure the appeals process is fair and doesn’t incentivise people feel they have wrongly been penalised to not appeal through fear of receiving a larger penalty for appealing; and to push for data to be published on the airport’s income from the drop-off and collection charges.

We want a charging system that is fairer and more transparent for local people in Oldham West, Chadderton & Royton.

For further detail, see the letter we sent in response to the reply from the MAG in-full on my Facebook page.

Next Steps for the Bee Network

So much progress has been made over recent years, to Mayor Andy Burnham’s great credit, to deliver Bee Network buses to all of Greater Manchester, integrate ticketing between buses and trams, keep the ยฃ2 single fare cap in place and begin work to deliver Bee Network commuter rail in phases in 2028 and 2030.

A single London-style transport system for our city-region which is clean, green, affordable, reliable, accessible & publicly owned is what we are creating. Now is not the time to be complacent, but instead to double down & go further.

I support Manchester Evening News’ campaign to secure a free bus pass for all homeless children in temporary accommodation in Greater Manchester who are more than a 30 minutes walk away from school.

This measure will prove vital for some of the most vulnerable families in our borough and ensure children who face uncertainty that they are not uprooted from their local support networks and the communities they call home.

Over many years as local MP in Oldham West, Chadderton & Royton, I have called for an extension to our tram route so it can serve more communities and connects differing areas without having to go via Manchester City-centre.

Therefore, it is brilliant to see that the outline business case is set to be completed in 2026 for the Oldham-Rochdale line to connect to Bury via Heywood, completing an orbital route in the north-east of the conurbation. Along with new stops set to be added to our line in North Manchester & Cop Road starting in 2030, government transport infrastructure funding is having an impact.

The new route will utilise many existing infrastructure assets, including via the Rochdale tram line and potentially the East Lancashire Railway unlocking tram-train technology on the network.

Encouraged by this progress, as your local MP, I will push for more by continuing to advocate for the reopening of Middleton Junction station (as is happening in Golbourne and Cheadle), and for the expansion of the tram network by bringing existing routes in our borough Middleton & Chadderton.

Last week’s meeting of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority saw the approval given for work to begin on the development of a plan for an underground system for the centre of our city-region.

Our city-region is changing. The population will have exceeded 3 million by the late 2030โ€™s. By 2035, there will be at least 200,000 new jobs created across Greater Manchester, with 600,000 additional daily trips on our transport network.

Greater Manchester is already the fastest growing city-region in the UK, and we want to ensure this growth is not held back. Taking our network underground will unlock investment potential on the surface and mean greater capacity and reliability of trams and trains.

It’s back-to-school season and Labour is helping families save up to ยฃ8000 a year

โœ… Free breakfast clubs being rolled out to every primary school

โœ… 300 new school-based nurseries

โœ… 30 hours free childcare for working parents

โœ… New student concessions on Bee Network buses

โœ… Capped school uniform costs

โœ… Over ยฃ2 billion extra investment going into the early years sector

Schools are back for the new academic year next wee and we know cost-of-living pressures are still affecting working families. That’s why have been implementing measures in our first year in government to support parents.

The rollout of free breakfast clubs began in April in a number of primary schools, including Whitegate End, Richmond Academy, Westwood Academy and Northmoor Academy in this constituency. These breakfast clubs mean that every child in those schools will now start their day with a healthy breakfast and at least 30 minutes of free childcare.

The IGO Pass and the Our Pass will continue meaning 11-16 year olds can travel using discounted child tickets on buses & trams and 16-18 year-olds get free local bus travel in Greater Manchester. From next week, there will be a new ๐ก๐š๐ฅ๐Ÿ-๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐ž ๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ก๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐›๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ– ๐ญ๐จ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ ๐ฒ๐ž๐š๐ซ-๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ as well.

Looking ahead to next year, we have a plan to cut costs further. From September 2026, we will be expanding access to free school meals across the country, which is set to With Labour, over half a million more children will get free school meals because any child in England whose parents are on Universal Credit will be eligible.

This will mean the 9800 children in Oldham West, Chadderton & Royton between years 3-11 who are in families currently claiming universal credit will benefit from the extension. Weโ€™re giving every child, no matter their background, the nutrition they need to learn, grow and thrive from an early age.

We are proud that the last Labour government took almost 1 million children out of poverty. However, 14 years of Tory chaos and decline led to us reaching record levels of child poverty in the months before they left office. However, this new government is acting to tackle child poverty head on through our recently launched Child Poverty Taskforce and these measures to cut costs for hard-working families.

Update: Efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour linked to nuisance fireworks

We’ve been contacted by a large number of residents in Chadderton & Werneth who are rightly concerned about the late-night use of fireworks – often well beyond acceptable hours – causing serious distress for families, older residents, pet owners, and those with mental health conditions.

The GMP acknowledge that this illegal use of fireworks is a real problem at the moment and difficult for them to police because once fireworks go off, the illegal activity is long over and concealed by the time the police receive any reports.

Chadderton & Werneth’s local neighbourhood policing team have confirmed to us that they have:

To be absolutely clear: this kind of antisocial behaviour is unacceptable, and no one should feel unsafe or unable to sleep peacefully in their own home. And itโ€™s fair to say that public patience with these all too regular selfish acts has worn thin.

While fireworks can be part of cultural and family celebrations, they must be used responsibly and within the law. Under the Fireworks Regulations 2004, it is an offence to use fireworks after 11pm and before 7am without permission (except on permitted fireworks nights when the times are extended).

In government, Labour is committed to tackling this issue head on.

Old Civic Centre vacated for final time today …

Built in phases between 1962 and 1977, the Oldham Civic Centre and Queen Elizabeth Hall became home of Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council in 1977 when they were officially opened by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother – the hall named to commemorate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977.

The photos below show the civic centre at its best over recent years: with England flags flying high on St George’s Day, lit up for the 80th anniversary of VE Day, towering over the town centre as a staple of our borough’s skyline, and as part of a model for the bus station I saw at Greater Manchester Museum of Transport.

It was a privilege to spend over a decade as local councillor for Failsworth East & over 4 years as Leader of Oldham Council based at the Civic Centre. As a candidate at a by-election in 2015 and 3 general elections since then, I have spent long nights in the Queen Elizabeth Hall as votes have been counted. These institutions have played a big role in my life, as they have for so many.

But as one chapter ends, another begins. With Council offices moving to Spindles and to the JR Clynes Building, many milestones have been hit in the regeneration of Oldham Town Centre.

The New Market Hall & Events Space off Parliament Square are nearing completion, the Coliseum has been saved at its historic home on Fairbottom Street ready for next year, the Old Town Hall jigsaw has neared completion with the recent opening of the Egyptian Room, and the Oldham Town Living Development Framework is well underway.

These projects have a shared goal: protecting our rich heritage, bringing the modern facilities & institutions local people deserve to our town centre, and concentrating footfall to support high street retailers & small businesses.
