Well deserved recognition for the JR Clynes Building

It’s great to see the J.R. Clynes Building receive national recognition.

The building lay empty for far too long and it always had huge potential to serve the community once again.

Now it’s home to the councils civic functions and the amazing Oldham Theatre Workshop alongside its artwork displays.

Named after one of Oldham’s most significant political figures, J.R. Clynes began from humble beginnings, with his father a labourer who helped build Alexandra Park. He went from millworker to become Leader of the Labour Party and Home Secretary. His story is part of our borough’s proud tradition of public service and working-class representation.

This award is a reminder that preserving our heritage isn’t just about restoring old buildings. It’s about celebrating the people and history they represent while giving them a new community purpose for future generations.
