I was delighted to be appointed as a Minister in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government by the new Prime Minister in July. Since then, I’ve had a chance to reflect on my 10-month period on the backbenches, where the focus was on a series of campaigns and projects that were important to constituents in Oldham West, Chadderton & Royton.
These included:
Campaigning with Unison & the RAC Foundation for HMRC to update the 45p ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ to 55p per mile, which had been frozen for 15 years, as well as securing a commitment from the Treasury to review the system ahead of the next budget.
Thanks to the campaigning of Chadderton couple Ryan & Cassie Claydon, introduced a Bill to Parliament to allow ๐๐๐ถ๐น๐น๐ฏ๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐ต๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ด๐ถ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐บ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ in England & Wales, avoiding the need for families to attend a registrarโs office in person.
Travelled as part of a ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐น๐ถ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐ด๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ผ ๐จ๐ธ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ, including visits to Chernobyl and Kyiv, and later hosted Ukrainian co-operative leaders in Parliament to discuss the countryโs recovery and rebuilding.
Helped ๐๐๐ฟ๐ผ ๐๐ secure inclusion in a ยฃ4.5m community regeneration funding programme, supporting the clubโs facilities and its work with hundreds of local young people.
Worked with local Labour Councillors in Coldhust to secure Council backing for the restoration of ๐ช๐ฒ๐๐ ๐๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฆ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฝ๐ถ๐๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐ through funding for a new all-weather pitch, new facilities and bringing the West End Street site back into community use.
Tackled the ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ-๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ ๐ข๐ by pushing for stronger planning controls, with Oldham Council acting to ensure smaller HMOs now face greater scrutiny through the planning process – as well as submitting a formal objection to the proposed HMO conversion on Long Lane in Chadderton
Supported and worked with the Shared Health Foundation in their work to end the plight of ๐ข๐น๐ฑ๐ต๐ฎ๐บ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ถ๐น๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป ๐น๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ฒ๐บ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป through better housing, higher standards, and an end to children living for years in unsuitable accommodation.
Brought National Highways, Costco, the council and local businesses together to push for a solution to the persistent congestion around the
Worked with local campaigners and community groups in Fitton Hill to explore bringing the long-disused ๐๐ผ๐น๐ ๐ฅ๐ผ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ต๐๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ต ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ผ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐๐ป๐ถ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฒ for local groups, youth activities and support services.
Secured unanimous support from Oldham Council for action on ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฐ๐ต๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ฟ๐’๐ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฝ-๐ผ๐ณ๐ณ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ด๐ฒ๐ and challenged the airport directly over the impact on local residents and what can be done to extend more job opportunities at the airport to our borough.
I worked with colleagues from across these islands on shared challenges and strengthening the UK-Ireland relationship.
Successfully challenged proposals for Royton Town Centre, with TfGM and the council agreeing that ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐ ๐๐ต๐ผ๐๐น๐ฑ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐น๐ผ๐ป๐ด๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ’๐ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ to help keep pedestrians safe.
I’m grateful to everyone who helped turn those concerns into campaigns for change, each one started with local people and grassroots community action.
Being a local MP for me is about more than what happens in Westminster. It is about standing up for our communities, working with people to find solutions and getting things done.
While my time on the backbenches is over, I won’t stop trying to get things done for local people – after all, community work is the route I took into politics all those years ago.
