Meeting Irish Minister to discuss work to grow credit unions

I appreciated Robert Troy, the Minister of State for Financial Services, Credit Unions, and Insurance in Ireland taking the time to discuss the work they are doing to strengthen and grow credit unions.

Credit unions, building societies and mutual banks are a foundation of fair access to affordable finance, but we can do more in the UK.

A key priority for the Co-op Party and MPs in Parliament. Critically credit unions are held back by limits on โ€œpotential membersโ€ which stunts growth and the ability to have larger more competitive credit unions then able to offer a greater range of financial products to local people.

I should also take this opportunity to welcome Lyndsey Gilkes as the new chief executive of Oldham Credit Union and thank Mike Louden for his decades of service to the town. ๐Ÿ™

Great to see proud Oldhamer Dr Georgia Brennan again!

It was a pleasure to catch up with Dr Georgia Brennan at the Maths Week Parliamentary Expo.

A proud Oldhamer raised on Fitton Hill who went on to Oxford to complete a PhD where she now works on mathematical modelling of Alzheimerโ€™s disease to help support the development of new treatments.

An inspiring journey not least because of her work to encourage more talented people from underrepresented communities to pursue opportunities at leading universities.

Itโ€™s always a boost to meet with Oldhamers who have gone on to great things. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’ช

Operation Vulcan has been such a success in Derker, why can’t we do the same in more places?

Efforts made by the GMP in Operation Vulcan in Derker to crack down on crime are hugely appreciated. While just focused on one area, it has had significant a significant impact across our borough, not least of all through the tram network which I saw first hand at a visit to South Chadderton last year with the neighbourhood team.

With around 144 vehicles have been seized, 500 people have been stop-searched, more than one hundred care plans put in place, and dozens of bladed weapons seized; the operation has been proven to work well.

While we know this more heavy handed approach can only work with proper preventative measures alongside it, nonetheless, this work should be celebrated and we are calling for it to be expanded.

In late October, during a meeting with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, Deputy Mayor for Safer & Stronger Communities Kate Green, Head Of Estates at GMP Peter Bannister, and Oldham Council Leader Arooj Shah, we discussed the work being done to tackle Youth Knife Crime, Gangs & Child Criminal Exploitation in our borough, which I also spoke about in a Westminster Hall Debate earlier last month.

That is why the next step in our work has been to write to Deputy Mayor Kate Green for Safer & Stronger Communities directly since we are keen that the success in cracking down on anti-social behaviour and organised crime in Oldham is expanded to include hotspots in the Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton constituency. Limeside, for example, has been subject to the largest number of Section 60 notices of any area in Oldham and one of the highest in Greater Manchester, with 6 in the area since mid-2023 alone.

There are terrific organisations across the three towns in my constituency who do great work, often unseen, to support young people in sports, arts, culture and other rewarding activities. We believe these are part of the solution alongside the police, the local authority, and others such as schools. Operation Vulcan has been such a success in Derker, why can’t we do the same in more places?

Co-op Party Conference 2025

A pleasure once again to address the Co-operative Party’s annual conference as party Chair in central London this weekend.

This year’s theme is our ongoing flagship campaign: Community Britain, exploring how we can put communities at the centre of politics and shape a fairer, more democratic country with people in the driver’s seat.

This government committed at the election to doubling the size of the co-operative sector and we are acting to make this happen, whether its community energy policy as part of the new publicly-owned energy company GB Energy, a strengthened Community Right-to-Buy in the English Devolution & Community Empowerment Bill to enable communities to safeguard heritage and secure important local assets; or community-led housing being boosted in our drive to build 1.5 million more homes. And it was a moment to reflect on how our campaign with the Co-op and Usdaw to end violence against shop workers has now made it into law as a standalone offence.

Great to see co-operators from across trade unions, government, party branches and the wider co-operative & mutual sector, thanks for coming along.

Thank you to all the team for a fantastic job well done!

This week in Parliament

The House returned after the short November recess on Armistice Day. Instead of the usual debates or votes , time was set aside for a general ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€ – 107 years on from the laying down of weapons and conflict ending in the First World War. It remains a moment for deep reflection on the sacrifice made by those who served and those who never came home.

I submitted various ๐˜„๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ด๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ this week on our local priorities and what matters to people in Oldham West, Chadderton & Royton; from increased funding to social & affordable housing to supporting CSE victims & survivors, repairing potholes, and devolving post-16 education.

We also considered amendments from the Lords to the ๐—ฃ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—•๐—ถ๐—น๐—น as it reaches its final stages before becoming law. After 14 years of economic stagnation under the Tories, our living standards have fallen and the services we rely on have been hollowed out. We are determined to turn this around.

The reforms in this Bill will help end the housing crisis and unlock the infrastructure improvements our communities need, from better roads and schools to modernised tram lines and hospitals, alongside the right environment for private investment and good local jobs. That is what is at stake with this legislation.

Rather than travelling back to Oldham, this week I am staying in London for the annual It is always a highlight of the year and I look forward to meeting fellow co-operators as we take forward our plan to empower communities and grow the cooperative sector.

Abuse and harassment of councillors is completely unacceptable

The level of abuse and harassment being directed towards councillors across the political spectrum is completely unacceptable and more often than not goes unchecked.

If we want local people to come forward and serve in public life, it must be safe and rewarding as a bare minimum.

Oldham is unfortunately a sad example of a politics which is being torn by extreme and divisive actors chasing wedge issues, launching personal attacks and openly disrupting even routine democratic meetings.

In a single week meetings have been disrupted, online abuse stepping well over the line into harassment which has all the hallmarks of being coordinated, private meetings were unlawfully recorded and shared online, and the leader of the council has had to face court for alleged abuse she experienced going about her everyday business in the town.

Members and activists donโ€™t have to agree with each other to be able to debate issues they care about, they donโ€™t even need to particularly like eachother. But they do need to show respect and behave appropriately.

That this has now become normalised is not acceptable. The law needs strengthening, as does the code of conduct. But that is no substitute for personal responsibility.

As a local MP who lives here and cares about the borough Iโ€™ll do all I can to call this out and support any measures to make things better.

For everyone trying their best to make the borough better by serving in public life, thank you ๐Ÿ™

Great news for Oldham’s High Street

I welcome the pledge by Nationwide Building Society to keep its High Street branches open which are especially crucial for our town centre. Ensuring local access to face-to-face banking keeps our high street alive and supports local businesses and residents.

Since its acquisition of Virgin Money it now has two branches in Oldham which are important to drive footfall and secure banking facilities. Given weโ€™ve seen the closure of Royal Bank of Scotland and Barclays just doors away it gives choice to those who need face to face services.

Alongside the work to save the main Oldham Post Office, which was a rare success to celebrate, this is positive news.

It shows too that ownership matters. Nationwide is owned by its 16m UK members not distant shareholders, and itโ€™s why I support building societies being protected and celebrated.
